A large hardwood carving of the Madonna wearing a crown and holding the crowned Christ child in the crook of her left arm, standing on three winged cherubim above a plinth base inscribed with N S  DLoS REMEDIOS (Nuestra Señora de los Remedios - Our Lady of Remedios).   South America / Spanish Colonial, 17th century.

Condition: traces of polychrome and gilt decoration, historic wood beetle damage, losses to plinth

Our Lady of Remedios is the Patroness of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity founded in the late 12th century.   When Spain began the exploration and conquest of the Americas, she was favoured by the Spanish conquistadors. She remains a popular devotional figure in Spain and Latin America.
