Oak high relief carving of a Martyrdom, Antwerp, circa 1500
Oak carving in high relief of the martyrdom of an archbishop and three followers. The grisly scene showing two torturers/assassins with a King and two attendants looking on. Retaining traces of the original polychrome and gilt decoration. Antwerp, Circa 1550.
This is probably a scene from the Wars of Religion when armed conflict between Catholics and Protestants raged through Northern Europe. It is believed that in excess of three million people were killed during the conflicts.
