Scandinavian painted mangle board, dated 1847
Beech wood Mangleboard with a horse handle, painted with floral motifs in red and yellow with dark blue leaves on a turquoise ground and with the painted date 1847. Probably Norwegian, early 19th century.
Decorated Mangleboards, also known as smoothing boards, were used as courtship or betrothal gifts. Their function was to smooth laundry after washing and drying.
