Large studio pottery vase by William Marshall for Leach Pottery
£0.00
A large faceted stoneware vase covered on the exterior with a semi translucent speckled off white glaze, the interior glazed brown, the foot and foot rim unglazed and bearing the impressed WM and SI marks. William Marshall, 1923 - 2007 for Leach Pottery St Ives
Provenance: Purchased from Leach Pottery St Ives in the early 1960s by the previous private collectors.
William Marshall was one of the foremost British studio potters of the 20th century. A master thrower (that is, someone expert at building up a pot on the wheel), he was to become Bernard Leach's foreman and right-hand man at the Leach Pottery in St Ives. He became a major potter in his own right and developed his own distinctive language of bold forms and rich glazes. As Leach himself wrote: "Marshall became quite an expressive potter, one of the best in the country."
His work is in many important public collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
